Hi guys!
Today we will be beginning one of the most compelling stories you may ever read - Night by Elie Wiesel. The story, a semi-autobiographical account of Wiesel's experiences during the Jewish Holocaust of World War II, is told through the eyes of a character named Eliezer. Eliezer is essentially Weisel himself, but there are a few minor changes that were made by the author to help create a more tolerable distance from the horrific events that he experienced during the war.
Over the course of the next five school weeks, we will read the novel and analyze a series of questions relating to the novel, themes, context, plot structure, and characterization within it. We will also be responsible for creating an art project relating to the work and taking an essay-based final on the novel.
For the question section of the assessment, you will be required to complete questions for three sections of the book - Foreword/Chapters 1-3, Chapters 4-6, and Chapters 7-9 and post reading. Please post your answers as a blogspot response, ensuring that you complete each question with a significant amount of care. Remember to answer in full sentences, restating the question in your answer, and include quotes to support your responses where appropriate. If you will be unable to post by the given date, which will occur the Monday after the section is assigned, then you are responsible for submitting a handwritten copy of the questions and answers.
Good luck!

2. Describe Moshe the Beadle.
To me Moshe the Beadle was happy and caring in the beginning. One he came back, though, he was very bland. To me he didn’t seem at all the same he changed completely. This is my view of Moshe the Beadle.
3. What happens to Moshe in Chapter 1?
In Chapter 1. All the foreign Jews were expelled from Sighet, and Moshe was a foreigner. He was taken away to dig his own grave but was lucky, and was shot in the leg and left for dead. He later returned to warn the others about the horror. But sadly no one would believe him. This is what happened to Moshe in Chapter 1.
4. What news did Elie’s father learn the Saturday before Pentecost?
Elie’s father was summoned to a special meeting of the Jewish Council. While at the meeting Eli’s father finds out that there are going to be transports. The departures were to start the next day going street by street. But no one knew where they were going except for one: the president of the Jewish Council. Elie’s father finds out that they must prepare for the journey ahead.
5. Describe the scene on pp 14&15 ( leaving the ghetto). Please do not copy the words. How does it make you feel?
The scene on page 14 and 15 is like a night of terror and worry. People are running everywhere frantically trying to get ready to leave. This scene makes me sad. It makes me think about what is going to happen to them. It is a scene that really kicks in it makes you realize that this is serious and not something that you can just shake off.
Chapter 2
6. Describe the situation on the train.
The situation on the train was very awful. People we shoved into tiny cattle cars with barely any room to lie down, more or less move. It was a very long ride. People ran out of strength and became very weak and thirsty. In the midst of it all Madame Schachter was yelling loudly and losing her mind. She was all the time yelling at the Jews telling them to look at the fire, when there was no fire at all. Until they reached their final destination.
7. Where does the train finally stop?
The train finally stops in Birkerau.
8. How were Madame Schachter’s screams a premonition?
Her screams were a premonition because she kept yelling fire, fire when there was no fire at all. When the train was starting to slow down to make a stop she started yelling again. But for some reason everyone looked outside again to see a real fire. They were all amazed that what she was saying was going to happen to them before they knew it.
Chapter 3
9. What is going to happen to the prisoners at Auschwitz?
The prisoners are either going to be throw into the chimney and be killed or taken away. When they are taken away they are either going to work in the fields or factories. This is what happens to the prisoners at Auschwitz.
10. What should have happened to Elie if he did not lie about his age?
If Elie wouldn’t have lied about being 18 when he was only 15 he would have been separated from his father and probably thrown into the chimney to be killed. This is what would have happened to Elie if he wouldn’t have lied about his age.
11. When Elie arrived at the barracks, what was he made to do?
When Elie and the others arrived at the barracks they were told to strip off all their clothes. They were only allowed to keep their shoes and belts. This is what first happened to Elie when he arrived at the barracks.
12. What was the inscription on the iron door of Auschwitz? Do you believe it?
The inscription on the iron door of Auschwitz read Arbeit Macht Frei, which means work makes you free. No I don’t believe it because if you are working then you are still over close watch and if you mess up or don’t do something right then you are punished for your wrong doings. I feel that it holds you back. You may work to be free but work will never make you free.
13. Describe your reaction to the first three chapters of the book in as much detail as possible ( three paragraph minimum).
My reaction to the first three chapters to this book is wow. I had absolutely no idea that things were ever this bad and cruel. I was really surprised by the first four pages. When they said that they used babies as targets for the machine guns that brought tears to my eyes to think of those poor infants.
I think that this is a really good book and it is a great way to teach kids about what was happening in those times. It talks about all the hard ships that they had to go through in great detail and you can picture every thing that happens in your head. It is one of the great tragedy’s that has ever happened.
It is very sad and emotional to see the families broken up the way that they were. It is not right at all for the families to be broken up. It isn’t right for these people to have to suffer through this all because of what they are. I think that it is awful to have to read about these poor innocent people and the struggles that they have to go through. This is what I think of the first three chapters of the book Night.

What happens is the prisoners either walk into the chimney and burn to death and die or work in factories or go into the fields to work. That is what happens to the prisoners at Auschwitz.
10.What would have happened to Elie if he did not lie about his age?
If Elie did not lie about his age which he was 15 and said he was 18 he would been separated from his Dad and would have been thrown into the chimney to be killed. That is what would have happened to Elie if he did not lie about his age.

12.What was the inscription of the iron door of Auschwitz? Do you believe it?
The inscription on the iron door of Auschwitz read Arbeit Macht Frei, which means work makes you free. No I don’t believe it because while you are working and you mess up or don’t do something the right way you get hurt while being punished. I mean you work to be free but the work that they do will never make you free.
13.Describe your reaction to the first three chapters of the book in as much detail as possible (three paragraphs minimum).
My reaction to the first three chapters of Night is Holy Crap.I never knew people were this evil to other people. As I was reading what got my attention first was when they were throwing babies up in the air, for target practice. They shot the babies with machine guns. Who ever does that is really sick. That is really sad.
So far I think this is a really awesome book. It tells to people about what happened at that time. It talks about all of the hard stuff they had to go through. And all of the cruel stuff, it gives you full detail. This is a big tragedy that has happened in the World.
During the first couple paragraphs it is really hard, because all of these poor families are getting separated. Just because who they are they shouldn’t be treated like that. They go through a lot of stuff. Little food, little drink, little clothes in the winter, it goes on and on. And if they mess up while they work, they get punished. It was a hard and sad time.
Those people never thought about seeing their families back. Because the young ones may get killed by the chimney. The teens get separated from their parents and work somewhere else or get killed by the chimney. And the old people get to work or die from the chimney. It all depends on there working ability. This is harsh. I mean if you’re a baby you cant do nothing. This is a sad book.
This is my reaction to the first three chapters of the book Night.

It talks about the times of desperation and need for these people. They lost absolutely everything they ever cherished. It honestly made me realize I am truly blessed to have what I have. Their families and homes were torn apart on they very first day. They had nothing to their name. The chapters are highly descriptive. I can imagine what he saw & everything. I think everyone should read this especially the people who take what they have for granted. It’ll teach them a thing or two.
