1. What affect did the first sentence have on you? Why did the author use it? (ask this question again after reading the whole book)
The first sentence kind of scared me a little. It made me think that this book is going to be about death and fighting as in a war.
2. Do you feel you have to stay on the good side of anyone in your life? Why?
I think that you should always try to stay on a persons good side, but it is alright to sometimes cross that line every now and again. I feel that if you stay on their good side that you will have a better relationship with them that what you would if you were all the time fighting.
3. What would you do/how would you feel if you found out someone was keeping private information about you? (like Obie’s notebook)
At first I would feel a little weird about it, because it is my personal information and none of their business what goes on in my life.
4. Why is the man at the bus stop contemptuous of Jerry? What does he mean when he tells him he’s “missing a lot in the world?”
He is contemptuous of Jerry because he always watches them and does the same thing every time that they come around. He means that he is missing out on so much because he sticks to the same routine day after day.
5. Who is Brother Leon? Describe him.
Brother Leon is kind of the headmaster and teacher. He has a lot of authority in the school. He thinks that he can tell someone to do something and they will. He is the kind of teacher that it is either his way or no way at all.
6. Who are the Vigils? Why does everyone in the school ignore the Vigils?
The Vigils are kind of like a gang. They are a group of boys who go around and mess up stuff and sometimes make things a lot better. Everyone ignores them because they do the things that make school bad for the others. They drag in innocent kids and make them feel miserable.
7. Why does Goober have to comply with the assignment? What would you do?
The Goober has to comply with the assignment because it is a tradition at Trinity. I wouldn’t do the assignment. If it is a tradition let them pick someone else to do it because I don’t want to.
8. What kind of a teacher is Brother Leon? Have you ever seen a teacher pick on a student? Have you ever been picked on by a teacher? What did the rest of the class do?
Brother Leon is a very out there type teacher. He likes to pick on his students and make them feel uncomfortable while they work but walking all over the room and watching their every move. Yes, I have seen students be picked on by teachers. I have also been picked on by teachers as well. It wasn’t really a mean being picked on more of just a teasing factor. The rest of the class thought it was funny, which it was.
9. Do you know anyone with any of Emile’s characteristics? What are they?
Yes I know all kinds of people, well they are more so a group. In our school they would be referred to as the hicks or rebels. They will do whatever they can to get by.
10. Why do they choose to pick on Brother Eugene?
They choose to pick on Brother Eugene because of some previous problems that they have had with Brother Eugene.
11. Jerry feels like he can’t talk to his father. How could he remedy the situation? Do you ever feel that way? How could you remedy the situation?
He can just come out and be open with his father about it. He could start a casual conversation and kind of build up to what is bugging him about his father. I sometimes feel like that but I am a very open person and if I want to get to the bottom of something I go for it. But I will admit that there are times when I am afraid to ask someone something. I try my best to come right out and be open about the situation.
12. What have you had to sell for school fundraisers? Have you felt any pressure to sell? What drives the pressure to sell in this novel?
Yes, I have had to sell candy bars or candles for school. I have felt pressure to sell yes because it is usually to raise money to get to go on a trip somewhere or something in that nature. What drives these young boys to sell in the novel is Brother Leon.
13. Describe the coach in chapter 12. What does his behavior suggest about his views toward the students at Trinity?
The Coach in chapter 12 is impressed with what that last play brought to the table. He is very sort of angry with the players in the beginning because they aren’t able to complete a pass and score. But as soon as that last play rolls around he becomes very happy. He believes in the player as long as they believe in themselves.

1) What affect did the first sentence have on you? Why did the author use it?
The first sentence “They murdered him,” was a little bit awkward for me the first thing that popped in my head was someone has all ready killed him.
I didn’t really understand why the author used it. I think that it’s because he lost the game by a lot so “they got murdered.”

2) Do you feel you have to stay on the good side of anyone in your life? Why?
Yes I do feel like I have to stay on some people’s good side in my life. I feel like I have to stay on my families’ good side because if I’m not on theirs then you’re not on anyone’s no matter what if you don’t have family you don’t have anyone. They are the ones that should always bee there for you no matter what kind of situation you get yourself in. They are the ones that should pick you up when you’re down. And lift you up when you can reach. They’re the ones that will be there till the end.

3) What would you do/how would you feel if you found out someone was keeping private information about you? (Like Obie’s notebook)
If I found out that someone was keeping private information about me like Obie’s notebook I’d be extremely mad. I think that no one should snoop around in your business without your permission. It’s not right and you shouldn’t be allowed. I would feel scared as well just knowing that people can go around and find out anything that they want to about people is really scary, and it makes me feel really uncomfortable.

4) Why is the man at the bus stop contemptuous of Jerry? What does he mean when he tells him he’s “missing a lot in the world?”
The man at the bus stop was so contemptuous of Jerry because he was staring at them for days and the others didn’t like it.
When he said, “you’re missing a lot of things in the world, better not miss that bus,” I think he was talking about all of the things that he was missing because he went to school every day. He had a schedule and if was to stick to it, he would miss what life is all about. He would miss the fun things in life and what it feels like to not have a plan, to be spontaneous.

5)Who is Brother Leon? Describe him
Brother Leon was the Assistant Headmaster of the school and an Algebra teacher.
He is a very intelligent, and really knows what he wants. When he wants something he goes for it no matter what it takes, but he doesn’t like what he wants get to his head he’s smart about it.

6) Who are the Vigils? Why does everyone in the school ignore the Vigils?
The Vigils are like the Thunderbird in “Grease,” they ruled that school.
They all ignore the Vigils because they’re scared of them, everyone wants to be one, but no one can.

7)Why does Goober have to comply with the assignment? What would you do?
If Goober didn’t do the assignment then he wouldn’t be able to become one of the Vigils and plus he has to do it because Archie drawled a white marble which means that Goober does the assignment not him. If he drew a black marble then he would have to do it.
If I were Goober I would do the assignment too, because if I didn’t then be more scared of what they would do to me than anything else.

8) What kind of teacher is Brother Leon? Have you ever seen a teacher pick on a student? Have you ever been picked on by a teacher? What did the rest of the class do?
Brother Leon is a tester. He tested his whole class by calling out one person in front of everyone to see who had guts and little ol’ Bailey did, he stood his ground and proved that he wasn’t a cheater.
I have seen a teacher pick on students before and it makes me mad every time I hear anything of the kind.
I have been picked on by a teacher before and it was not funny I really dislike her for that plus I didn’t even do what I got accused of doing.
While I was getting picked on the class just sat there and did nothing even though they knew that I didn’t do it. They still just sat there like nothing was going on at all.

9)Do you know anyone with any of Emile’s characteristics? What are they?
I know many people that have Emile’s characteristics.
They like to go around and get on peoples nerves just for the heck of it, Go around saying that they’re going to beat this person up or this one just acting like a real bad person (when they’re really not), they call people names when they don’t even know anything about that persons, but know that it’ll hurt their feelings so they do it anyways. I really just know people that are really bad and need to change their ways.

10)Why do they choose to pick on Brother Eugene?
They chose Brother Eugene because he was an easy target and that it was a good idea the have Goober do that assignment.

11)Jerry feels like he can’t talk to him father. How could he remedy the situation? Do you ever feel that way? How could you remedy the situation?
If he felt like he can’t talk to his dad then maybe it’s because he’s not comfortable with himself. If he could talk to him maybe things would be better for him. I know I can talk to my dad about anything at anytime no matter what it is. He will always be there for me no matter what and I love that about him. I would just face my fear and talk to him; it really could make things better. You would have things out in the open that need to be out there.

12)What have you had to sell for school fundraisers? Have you felt any pressure to sell? What drives the pressure to sell in this novel?
I had to sell many different types of candy at different times.
I never really felt any pressure to sell the candy. I always felt like I needed to that if I did it then I was doing something good for someone else.
They need more money because their school doesn’t have that much funding; therefore they have to sell two times the amount that they did the year before.

13)Describe the coach in chapter 12. What does his behavior suggest about his views toward the student at Trinity?
The coach I a mean person, he wants his team to be perfect and no one will ever be perfect and he needs to understand that. All he does is yell at the players and that’s not going to do any good. Even when the freshmen get a score against the varsity coach is still yelling. It’s not right and I wouldn’t put up with him, I think that the team needs someone that will respect them and that they can respect as well.

Pre Questions
1. By reading the biography of Robert Cormier I learned that he was alive during the recession and moved several times as a child. He lived in French hill. He was at his school at the Catholic Church when he could see his house burning from the church window. When he was about to go check on his family the sister would not let him leave until he recited on the rosary. After this he had some hard feelings for the Catholic church. He won several awards for his writing and he began writing at an early age.
2. In the story The Bully, a guy picks on younger kids that a much more weak than himself because he knows the cant do anything to him or his bullying buddies because they’re so much bigger. Bullying is about someone who isn’t satisfied with themselves and they have to pick on someone who can’t defend themselves so they have the feeling that they can do something to hurt someone, but when really they are just real jabronies.
Reading Questions
1. The first line made me feel like something bad or important was happening. I think that the author used this line because it was a very powerful and attracting sentence. The author seems to know ho to attract a reader and keep them reading on. The effect the first sentence is supposed to have is to attract the reader and get them hooked from the start.
2. Yes, because sometimes you have to so you can keep the peace, or keep your job. Plus if you stay on some ones good side then later on down the road they may help you in the future. It also never hurt to stay on some ones good side.
3. I would wonder what was in the notebook and why they had and why they were keeping the information about me. Then I’d probably think they were out to get me than I’d kick some A and then I’d take the notebook.
4. I think that The reason the man at the bus stop is contemptuous of Jerry is because He’s always doing the same boring thing and never switches anything up. Jerry is always watching the other boy and his friends seeing what their up to.
5. Brother Leon is a kind of cowardly with his whiney voice. He is a very scrawny boy. He assists but he is not quite a leader of the group.
6. The vigils are a group of boys kind of like a gang. They go around causing mischief and tearing stuff up all the time. People ignore the Vigils because they try to make the school worse for the others. They try to make other kids feel just as miserable and lonely as them.
7. Goober has to comply with the assignment because it’s a tradition at Trinity and they expect everyone to carry on the tradition. I wouldn’t do the assignment because I’m to paranoid and would be afraid I would get caught.
8. Brother Leon likes to make his students feel uncomfortable and pester them. He’s always trying to embarrass them. Yes I have been picked on by teachers several times. They weren’t just playing around either. For instants I was called a bum and was told I would never amount to anything. So I tried my best to get him fired. True story.
9. Yes I know a redneck or two, They just talk about their tractors all day, chew the backer, and start fights.
10. Brother Eugene had caused some problems in the past. So they figure they’ll pick on him to let him know how it is.
11. He can sit the old man down and say, “Hey, I got something I have to talk about” then he could continue from there. I have felt the same way but I just choose to let it go. I just let things work them selves out.
12. I never have sold anything for fundraising but I’m sure that it is frustrating sometimes because you are trying to raise money and not everyone will by your product. Leon really is the backbone of the drive. He encourages them to sell.
13. The coach is disappointed in the team because they can’t complete a pass and score. In the next play though he decides if the team thinks they can do it, then they can do it.

Brother Leon is a very out there type teacher. He likes to pick on his students and make them feel uncomfortable while they work but walking all over the room and watching their every move.
